Mechanisms of Interannual Variability of Ocean Bottom Pressure in the Southern Indian Ocean

چکیده

The study of ocean bottom pressure (OBP) helps to understand the changes in sea level budget and deep circulation. In this study, characteristics mechanisms interannual OBP variability Southern Indian Ocean are examined using Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data from 2003 2016. Results show that there two energetic centers (50°–60°S, 40°–60°E 45°–60°S, 80°–120°E). magnitudes at have strong on time scales, their values larger during austral summer (NDJF) winter (JJAS). Atmospheric forcing plays an important role local variability. high (low) (SLP) over benefits positive (negative) anomalies via convergence (divergence) Ekman transport driven by wind. Such SLP related Annular Mode (SAM), Oscillation (SO) dipole (IOD). SAM can influence both winter, while SO IOD correlations with respectively. These results validated a mass-conservation model, which further confirms importance atmospheric variations.

Carbon dioxide and oxygen fluxes in the Southern Ocean: Mechanisms of interannual variability

[1] We analyze the variability of air-sea fluxes of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the Southern Ocean during the period 1993–2003 in a biogeochemical and physical simulation of the global ocean. Our results suggest that the nonseasonal variability is primarily driven by changes in entrainment of carbon-rich, oxygen-poor waters into the mixed layer during winter convection episodes. The Southern A...

Ocean Currents Modeling along the Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean

The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Al...

Signals of Interannual and Interdecadal Variability of Air-SeaInteraction in the Basin-Wide Indian Ocean

Many climatologists are concerned with the variability of air-sea interactions. In this paper, signals of interannual and interdecadal variability of air-sea interactions in the southern subtropical Indian Ocean (SSIO) have been extracted from both monthly sea surface temperatures (SST) and monthly surface winds and compared to air-sea interactions of the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO). Empirical ...

Structure and Mechanisms of South Indian Ocean Climate Variability

A unique open-ocean upwelling exists in the tropical South Indian Ocean (SIO), a result of the negative wind curl between the southeasterly trades and equatorial westerlies, raising the thermocline in the west. Analysis of in-situ measurements and a model-assimilated dataset reveals a strong influence of subsurface thermocline variability on sea surface temperature (SST) in this upwelling zone....
